As the year winds down, I’ve been reflecting on where I began and how far I’ve come in 2024. I’ve neither arrived at my destination, nor just started out. At this juncture, I’m in a liminal space, which happens to be one of my favourite places to hang out.
Merriam Webster defines “liminal” as follows:
1: of, relating to, or situated at a sensory threshold : barely perceptible or capable of eliciting a response …liminal visual stimuli
2: of, relating to, or being an intermediate state, phase, or condition: in-between, transitional… in the liminal state between life and death.
While I would love to say that I’ve sold my breakthrough novel, I can’t. Yet, I’m no longer green as I’ve started the query process, mentored a handful of clients through my Lab (Leadership Literary Lab), and begun to make inroads in the industry. The journey ahead is long, but I’ve covered many miles, experiencing the highs of award nominations and the lows of “no” from acquiring agents.
When I think about life in a liminal space, a float tank comes to mind. Entering the tank, which is a foot or so of highly concentrated salt water at room temperature in an enclosed space, I gingerly lay down and let go. It’s disorienting at first, but before long, my mind is free and body is at rest.
Liminal spaces are about transitions. At this time in my life and career, there are wonderful things on the horizon, but none of them have come to pass. A mentor of mine once said “accept what is, while it is, for as long as it is.” Sage advice. I’ll keep that in mind as I coast—no, float—along the path, remembering to appreciate those I encounter along the way, including you. 🙏
Writer’s Retreat in the Rockies ⛰️🇨🇦
Over the past few months, I have been gathering information on and evaluating the feasibility of a writers’ retreat in the Canadian Rockies. This will be no ordinary write-in, but a luxury experience of a world-class travel destination: Banff, Alberta.
Together with my partner, Coach Jason, we will be facilitating what we’re calling “Writer’s Cramp,” because the offering will not only include ample time to work on penned projects, but also guided hikes, gourmet dining, spa services, and optional workshops on healthy practices for writers.
As a subscriber to my newsletter, you’re the first to hear about it. If you would like to receive details and a special offer on the retreat in the new year, click this link, fill in the fields, and type “add my name” in the message: Add my name.
